Alimiyyah Course

Outline

The Alimiyyah course at Madrasah Baytul ‘Ilm is a version of the traditional course that has proven successful throughout the ages and is still a valued system of learning in Islamic educational establishments worldwide.

It is specially engineered to cover the key Islamic sciences needed to give an individual a comprehensive and thorough understanding of Islam. The course is structured around a series of set texts, including a core of sacred texts, classical works and other graded text books.

The course lasts six years, during which students achieve a solid grounding in classical arabic and make graded progress through the key sciences of Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence), Hadith (Prophetic Traditions) and Tafsir (Commentary of the Qur’an). Among the other subjects taught are modern arabic and urdu.

Aims

To carry out an in-depth study of the sacred sources of Islam, i.e. the Qur’an and Hadith, and the rulings derived from them in the form of Islamic Law, all after gaining proficiency in classical arabic.

Outcome

Students are expected to achieve a thorough understanding of classical arabic and related sciences. They are expected to understand the meaning and interpretations of the Qur’an and the major collections of Hadith and how they apply to an individual and to humankind. They are expected to know the principles of how Islamic laws are derived from the primary sources and have a sound knowledge of Islamic legal rulings. Students are expected to develop familiarity with the vast field of Islamic scholarship, and the skills to research and further their expertise in any particular area.

General Timetable

Enrolling on such an endeavour requires total commitment and avoidance of all other distractions. Students will follow a full day timetable; beginning classes from 8.30am through to 3.30pm (Mon-Fri), with an extended lunch break and salah break in between. This is followed by an evening session of two hours where students will group with classmates and revise through the previous day’s lessons as well as prepare for the lessons to come the next day. The alim class also consists of other activities such as; daily nafl salah to strengthen the dor of those students who are Huffaz, taking part in the daily ta’leem/bayan that takes place after salah in the masjid, practising delivering bayans in english and urdu on a bi-weekly basis etc.

Classes will run Monday to Friday and also Saturday mornings. Students must dedicate themselves and all their time to this course as it is not possible to acquire the desired success in it whilst having other engagements or commitments.
